The M.S. in Occupational Therapy, consisting of both classroom instruction and fieldwork, may be completed in approximately 24 months. All fieldwork and experiential components of the program must be completed within a time frame established by the program.

The program is designed to prepare students, upon completion of degree requirements, to sit for the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) for the practice of occupational therapy. After passing the NBCOT exam, students may apply for licensure in the state in which they intend to practice.

Occupational therapists provide services to individuals whose ability to cope with the activities of daily living are impaired by physical illness or injury, congenital or developmental disability, or the aging process.

In its simplest terms, occupational therapists help people of all ages participate in the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of everyday activities (occupations). Unlike other professions, occupational therapy helps people function in all of their environments (e.g., home, work, school, community) and addresses the physical, psychological and cognitive aspects of their well-being through engagement in occupation.

The Mission of the Master of Science in Occupational Therapy is to prepare occupational therapy students to think and act critically, missionally and globally in Christian service and leadership throughout their respective communities.

We believe in teaching students to recognize that occupation in its broadest sense is a great gift from God and therefore requires great responsibility. This responsibility is taught through our core values of: faith, service, authenticity, innovation and competency.

ACU’s M.S. in Occupational Therapy is built on these core values and incorporates the mission, vision, and strategic plan of the university and AOTA’s Centennial Vision. 

Together the vision, mission, and core values express the university’s aspirations for graduates and the profession.  ACU's M.S. in Occupational Therapy will be dedicated to the highest standards of the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) and the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).  These concepts provide the basis for defining the program’s purpose and result in the structure and design of the program's curriculum.

Abilene Christian University’s Master of Science program in Occupational Therapy philosophy reflects Mary Reilly’s statement that through the use of one’s hands a person is “. . .energized by mind and will, can influence the state of health.” Our belief about the definition of the scope of occupational therapy is that occupation can be defined as any activity or realm in which a human being finds meaning, pleasure, and purpose towards engaging in life.

Moreover, our view is that occupational therapy education promotes the philosophy that even as humans engage in a dynamic interactivity within the physical, social, temporal, cultural, psychological, spiritual, and virtual environments of life, is the very active engagement within the complex internal and external environments that create human change and adaptation. Occupational therapy education champions a fundamental assumption of health: to create change and adaptation within and for a participatory meaningful occupation that supports survival, self-actualization, occupational balance, and quality of life.
